Two hundred and fifty greens were sponsored by the Millennium Commission as part of a\u00a0national endeavor to celebrate the Millennium. They were administered by Countryside Agency, later\u00a0being transferred to English Nature.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Initial funding was awarded competitively from the Big Lottery\u00a0provided that matching funds could be raised from the third sector&#8211; including corporate and\u00a0individual contributions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">While most Millennium Greens work extremely closely with Local Councils,\u00a0each is owned and run by an independent Charity\u00a0accountable to the Charity Commission and English Nature\u00a0in an attempt to preserve the open spaces in\u00a0perpetuity for the local community. Various conditions are specified in the Trust Deeds: that they\u00a0should be open to the public during daylight hours, and that as a Charitable Trust they are accountable to the Charities\u00a0Commission.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">They should be attractive places for people to take air and exercise and enjoyed by\u00a0people of all ages and physical abilities. They should also include an area suitable for public events as\u00a0well as providing significant natural areas. The Deed also specifies that no permanent buildings\u00a0should be erected and that no more than 10% should be allocated to hard areas or car parks.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">No\u00a0formal sports grounds or playground apparatus should be built although covered spaces for\u00a0maintenance equipment is allowed.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Millennium Greens are permanent areas of green space created for local communities throughout the\u00a0UK.
